Why should our sports teams change their name or logo?
The answer is simple, what city does the average American think of when they think of the Lakers? Answer, Los Angeles. The simplest solution would be to add the word "GREAT" before "LAKERS" to distinguish us from the NBA team. Another solution would be to use an archaic term to refer to a Sailor, Tarjack. If we adopt the term "Tarjack," we would be the only team with that name in the country. It would be ours and ours alone.
For those who don't know, a Laker is both a type of boat and a type of Sailor. To keep that tradition alive, we could call ourselves the Tarjacks. A Tarjack is a variation on the term "Jack-Tar." The "Tar" refers to the tar which was usually on the Sailor's uniforms from working on a ship all day. "Jack" has always been a term for a Sailor. Switching it around to read as "Tarjack" was also used as a term for a Sailor in what would become the United States in the 18th Century. It was also briefly used during World Wars I and II as a term for American Sailors.
"Sailors became a symbol of revolutionary ideals. These 'Tar Jacks,' with their capricious-spending, drunkenness, and rowdy behavior, shunned traditional society."
-Liberty on the Waterfront: American Maritime Culture in the Age of Revolution by Paul A. Gilje
The disadvantage of keeping the nickname "Lakers" alone, is that even a simple internet search of the word "Lakers" brings up nothing but the Los Angeles Lakers. Another nearby team with that nickname is the Grand Valley State University Lakers in Michigan.
The advantage of having a unique name, such as "Tarjack," or even shortening it to just the "Jacks," would have is that Roosevelt sports would have automatic brand recognition. Many teams can be the "Tigers," "Wildcats," or the "Eagles," but as soon as anyone says "Sooner," "Buckeye," or "Jayhawk," most Americans automatically know what university people are talking about.
Since Roosevelt University prides itself on social justice, which is the modern revolutionary ideal, this name "Tarjack" works. Along with that, Theodore Roosevelt, before he was president, was Secretary of the Navy and Franklin Roosevelt was America's most popular progressive and wartime president.
